Simply put, a full mouth reconstruction combines a mixture of restorative and cosmetic dental treatments to improve the health, function, and look of a patient’s smile. While treatment plans often vary depending on the person’s unique dental needs, the recovery time often consists of the same best practices, such as taking a few days off of work to rest and refraining from extensive exercise while you heal. However, if you’d like to learn more about the topic, then read on as we cover what you can expect while recovering from a full mouth reconstruction.
Dental Implants
If you are one of the 178 million Americans who are struggling with tooth loss, then you’ve likely heard of the gold standard in tooth replacement: dental implants. In addition to having the potential to last for 30+ years, they are the only solution that’s inserted directly into your jawbone, preventing bone loss and preserving your youthful facial structure. Naturally, one of the most crucial steps of the process is the surgery itself. Following your appointment, it’s crucial to rest so your body can focus on healing. Over the next 3-6 months, a process called osseointegration will take place, which is when the jawbone and the implant fuse together.
Dental Crowns
Since they are both durable and lifelike, dental crowns can be used to restore or cosmetically enhance a tooth. In both cases, the tooth (or teeth) in question will need to be prepped. After that, impressions will be made for the lab artisans who craft your final restoration. In the meantime, you will wear a temporary one. Since it isn’t designed to last, it’s important that you don’t chew on that side of your mouth until your permanent one is cemented in place. If needed, you can take an over-the-counter pain reliever to alleviate any soreness you feel.
Gum Disease Therapy
Of course, the extent of gum disease therapy depends entirely on the stage of your gum disease. If it’s caught in the early stages, then removing the infection may simply require a few extra visits to our office so we can remove the built-up plaque and tartar on an ongoing basis. For moderate stages of this infection, scaling and root planing becomes necessary. Again, this requires several appointments to complete. Following each visit, you may feel some sensitivity. The best thing you can do is implement a solid oral hygiene routine and do your best to avoid unhealthy dental habits to prevent the infection from resurfacing.
Veneers
If you want to correct misshapen, discolored, misaligned, or otherwise imperfect teeth, then veneers are one of the best options! Similar to dental crowns, the process will begin with preparing your teeth, taking impressions for the dental lab, and providing you with a temporary set. Until your permanent veneers arrive, you will be asked to stick to a soft-food diet.
Of course, your dental team will guide you through every step of your full mouth reconstruction, including the recovery process. However, if you ever have a question, don’t hesitate to ask!
