Dry Socket and How to Avoid it

Most of the time when patients get tooth extractions, they’re pleasantly surprised by how painless the procedure is. Modern anesthetics are remarkably effective, meaning that you likely won’t feel much of anything while the tooth is being removed.

However, taking care of yourself after the procedure is still very important, and doing it incorrectly can lead to complications. Dry socket is an excellent example. If you want to learn more about this condition and how it can affect you, here’s what you should know.

What is Dry Socket?

After a tooth extraction, one of the most important parts of the healing process is the clot emerging on the extraction wound. This clot serves to protect the tender bone and nerve tissue, and without it the process of healing would be substantially more uncomfortable.

In certain circumstances, this clot can be dislodged from its place. This is known as dry socket, and it can seriously slow down the healing process. As a consequence, one of your top priorities during aftercare should be to keep the clot in place.

How to Prevent Dry Socket

One of the main ways that dry socket occurs is in situations where suction has pulled the clot out of the wound. It may seem unlikely, but this can actually happen fairly easily.

Using a straw, for example, creates a surprising amount of suction in the mouth. This is a common mistake, as most people are on a soft food diet in the days immediately following their surgery. Smoothies are a common part of these kinds of diets, but when you drink them, be sure to do so without a straw.

You should also avoid smoking and vaping, as both of these activities can pull the clot out of place. Moreover, nicotine is a vasoconstrictor, meaning that it prevents blood flow to the mouth. This makes healing even harder. For that reason, it’s recommended not to consume any nicotine while recovering from tooth extraction.

Finally, it’s a good idea to avoid any chewy or gummy foods that could disturb clot formation as you chew them.
