Dental veneers are a popular method of cosmetic dental treatment that was once only accessible to Hollywood movie stars. Used to hide imperfections, transform smiles, and boost the confidence of actors and actresses, these custom creations have changed over time – not in their purpose – but in how they are made. Found in dental offices throughout the U.S., veneers make it possible to experience a showstopping smile no matter who you are or what you do for a living. Read on to learn more about the evolution of these restorations from 1928 to now.
The Early Days of Veneers
Dr. Charles Pincus made be an unfamiliar name, but as a dentist in California in 1928, he was the first person to create veneers. Designed to enhance the smiles of movie actors, their thin shells covered teeth with the help of a temporary adhesive.
Over time, Hollywood celebrities began to appreciate the way their smiles looked during filming, so they opted to have veneers bonded to their teeth.
Veneers in the Mid-20th Century
By the late 1950s, Dr. Michael Buonocore changed the way veneers were put into place by incorporating the use of etching. This process meant a weak acid was placed on the surfaces of teeth so that they became porous and more likely to bond with the veneer once it was put in place.
Of course, by 1982, etching for the purpose of veneers was used by Simonsen and Calamia, two researchers who were looking for a way to create a stronger bond between teeth and veneers. Once the bonding agent (the acid) was applied to the teeth, additional resin was placed over the top, making it possible for veneers to have a sturdier foundation to attach to.
This new process made veneers more readily accessible and affordable for all interested patients, not just celebrities.
Veneers As We Now Know Them
The kind of veneers that are found in dental offices now mimic the goal of those created in 1928; however, advancements in dental materials and technology now make results appear more natural than before.
While the same bonding and etching practices are used, veneers are commonly made from high-grade porcelain, allowing patients to enjoy a smile that looks quite similar to regular teeth. Also, they are stain-resistant and long-lasting (staying in place for a decade or longer).
Another preferred update is how impressions are taken. Instead of dentists turning to traditional dental putty, digital impressions are now commonly used.
It can be interesting to learn about the evolution of veneers and how they got started, but thanks to the changes that have occurred over the past 95 years, they are now a visible option should you desire to transform your appearance with the help of these custom restorations.
