Dentures are a popular way to rebuild your grin after tooth loss because they restore so much of your ability to eat and speak again. That said, it’s important to care for them properly so that you can continue to make the most of the many benefits they provide. If you’re not sure what that includes, keep reading to learn about 4 best practices to keep your dentures in tip-top shape!

Tip #1: Rinse Them After Meals

One of the greatest advantages to having dentures is that you can once again enjoy meals with family and friends because they restore so much of your chewing ability. When you eat, however, food particles from your meal cling to your false teeth and attract unhealthy bacteria. This can form plaque buildup which can damage your dentures as well as cause gum disease. To prevent this, remove them when you’re done eating or drinking anything to thoroughly rinse them off.

Tip #2: Keep Your Mouth Clean

You don’t want to make the extra effort to clear debris off your dentures just to put them back into a dirty mouth. Whenever you take them out to clean them, be sure to gently rinse or brush your gums, too. You can use a soft-bristled toothbrush or gauze to scrub them along with your tongue, inside your cheeks, and the roof of your mouth. This helps eradicate any toxic microbes or bits of food to keep your dentures and breath fresh!

Tip #3: Give Them a Rest

It can be easy to forget that you’re wearing dentures once you’ve adjusted to them and accidentally fall asleep with them still in your mouth. Doing so unfortunately causes problems for your oral health as well as your prosthetics.

Your restoration relies on a tight suction against your gums which gives unwanted germs a great place to flourish. If you don’t take them out in the evening before bed, you are more likely to develop periodontal disease as a result. Plus, your mouth deserves a break from the constant pressure of supporting your false teeth. You can store your dentures in a glass of cool water or cleaning solution overnight to rejuvenate them at the same time.

Tip #4: Schedule Your Next Appointment

Skipping dental visits isn’t a good idea if you have dentures. When you lose teeth, your body reabsorbs bone mass from your jaw that’s no longer needed to support them. As a result, it begins to deteriorate and gradually changes shape over time. That means that eventually, your prosthetics will no longer fit correctly. Loose dentures can cause abrasions inside your mouth and TMJ disorders in addition to the embarrassment of having them pop out at an inopportune moment.

By seeing your dentist every 6 months, they can monitor your dental condition as well as your dentures to ensure everything is working as intended.

Now you know how to keep your refurbished smile looking and feeling great for the long run!
