Invisalign aligners are known for their subtlety. Many teenagers and adults prefer braces made of clear plastic as opposed to those made of bulky, visible metal, but is it possible for these custom trays to lose their nearly invisible appearance? If you want to make sure your orthodontic treatment remains discreet, your dentist shares four tips you can use to properly maintain your Invisalign.
Tip #1: Thoroughly Clean Your Invisalign Aligners
Just rinsing your trays when taking them out of your mouth isn’t enough if you want them to maintain their appearance. You must thoroughly clean your aligners using a soft-bristled toothbrush, lukewarm water, and clear soap (or use Invisalign Cleaning Crystals) to remove bacterial buildup and food particles.
Regular cleanings should occur each night before bed as well as in the morning.
Tip #2: Remove Your Aligners Before Eating
Eating while wearing your Invisalign aligners is never a good idea. Although durable, they are susceptible to damage, which can easily occur when biting down and chewing your food. Also, food particles and bacteria can accumulate, making it easier for others to visibly see your braces.
Instead, remove your aligners before eating or drinking anything but water. This will keep them free of damage while also reducing the chances of discoloration.
Tip #3: Avoid Using Toothpaste to Clean Your Invisalign
Although it might seem like the most convenient option for cleaning your aligners, most toothpaste brands are highly abrasive and can scratch your trays, causing them to become more visible over time. Toothpaste can also leave behind an unsightly residue.
Choosing a clear, unscented soap is fine for cleaning your Invisalign, or you can ask your dentist for recommendations that are safe to use on your custom aligners.
Tip #4: Keep Your Aligners in a Protective Case
It may be easier to fold your aligners up in a napkin while eating lunch or sitting them on the countertop while enjoying dinner with your family, but this can result in lost or damaged trays that require replacement.
Investing in one or two protective cases will ensure that you have a safe place for your Invisalign aligners so that they do not accidentally get thrown away or damaged.
Invisalign is a flexible form of orthodontic treatment you can expect to enjoy, but it does come with a higher level of responsibility. By taking the time to consider these tips, you can make sure your aligners remain healthy and effective as you work toward a straighter smile.
