Heads Up! 5 Things You Should Know Before Getting Invisalign

For more than two decades now, patients from all around the world have addressed overbites, overcrowding, and everything in between without metal brackets and wires thanks to Invisalign. In fact, that’s one of the many reasons it’s so popular: the aligners are virtually undetectable. Of course, that doesn’t make this orthodontic treatment any less of a commitment. With this in mind, read on to learn five things you should know before getting Invisalign!

1. You Need to Wear the Aligners for 20+ Hours a Day

Although Invisalign aligners are removable, you shouldn’t get in the habit of taking them out when it’s not absolutely necessary. After all, you need to wear them for 20+ hours a day in order to stay on-track with your treatment plan! In other words, you need to keep them on unless you’re eating, drinking something other than water, or brushing your teeth.

2. Brushing Your Teeth After Each Meal Is a Must

Speaking of brushing your teeth… You need to do so after each meal and snack. Otherwise, the food particles, plaque, and other debris in your mouth will be trapped against your teeth. This dramatically increases your risk of tooth decay, and, if that happens, your teeth-straightening journey will come to an immediate pause.

3. The Average Treatment Timeline Is Only 12-18 Months

Oftentimes, patients wear traditional braces for two or three years. Invisalign, on the other hand, has an average treatment timeline of only 12-18 months! The best way to stay on-track with your plan is by following all of the guidelines – from prioritizing your check-in visits to wearing your aligners for 20-22 hours a day.

4. Sometimes, Other Orthodontic Accessories Are Needed

Patients often hear “Invisalign” and think “clear aligners.” However, other orthodontic accessories are needed in more moderate cases. A few examples include attachments, rubber bands, and buttons. At your initial consultation, your dentist will create your custom treatment plan and let you know if one or more of these are necessary to straighten your teeth and align your bite.

5. Any Soreness You Feel Will Be Temporary

When you first put on your aligners, they will feel tight. This is a good thing; it’s the pressure that will make your teeth move! As they adjust, the soreness will fade, but there are several things you can do to alleviate it even sooner, like drinking cool water, avoiding crunchy foods, and taking OTC pain medication (following the directions on the label).
