What to Know About Adjusting to Your New Oral Appliance

If you have sleep apnea, you know how much it can impact different areas of your life. This includes feeling constantly fatigued during the day while lacking the quality sleep you need when you go to bed. The good news is that there are a variety of options out there to help you get the rest you deserve. Oral appliances are effective for many people, but they take some time to get used to. Here are some things to take into account when you first get yours.

Why Do Some People Struggle Adjusting to New Oral Appliances?

Oral appliances are an excellent way to combat sleep apnea, but they do take some time to get used to. Here are the most common struggles people experience when they first get one:

  • Discomfort: Having something in your mouth while you sleep may feel a little uncomfortable at first. You could feel some tightness at first. As time goes on, you will adjust to this feeling.
  • Gagging: If you have a sensitive gag reflex, this can make it more difficult to put in your oral appliance when you aren’t used to it.
  • Displacement: When sleeping, some people unconsciously remove their appliances.
  • Drooling: New oral appliances can cause you to produce more saliva than you normally would.

What Can You Do to Adjust to Your New Oral Appliance?

Just like most things, practice makes perfect. Wear your oral appliance every night. This way, your mouth and brain will quickly adjust to the feeling of wearing it. After a little bit of time, you will no longer feel discomfort, your saliva production will return to normal, and nighttime displacement should cease. If you struggle due to a sensitive gag reflex, try wearing your appliance from time to time during the day so you can get used to putting it in. This way, it will be more comfortable to wear it throughout the night.

Are You Still Struggling with Your Oral Appliance?

If you continue to have a difficult time getting used to your oral appliance after three weeks, give your dentist a call. Explain to them what you are having a difficult time with. It’s possible that adjustments can be made to make your oral appliance more comfortable for you. Everyone’s smile is unique, so there isn’t a one-size-fits-all treatment.

If you find that you’re struggling with your new oral appliance, you aren’t alone. With a little bit of patience and by working with your dentist, you can improve your quality of sleep and quality of life.
